Lesson 1: Digital Skills & Your Digital Presence

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand why digital skills are critical for entrepreneurs.
  • Recognise the essential components of a digital presence.
  • Map your current online presence and define growth goals.
  • Identify which digital tools and platforms will support your startup journey.

Why Digital Skills Matter for Startups

For new entrepreneurs, digital skills are often the difference between being noticed and being invisible.

  • Visibility: Customers now search you online before they buy. No online presence = missed opportunities.
  • Credibility: A simple website or LinkedIn profile can establish trust even before you meet a client.
  • Efficiency: Tools automate tasks like invoicing, posting, or email follow-up — saving time and money.
  • Growth: With digital platforms, even a solo founder can reach national or global markets.

Without digital skills, you risk being left behind by competitors who are online.

What is a Digital Presence?

Your digital presence is every platform, profile, and tool that represents your business online. It’s your “virtual storefront” — open 24/7.

Core elements include:

  • Website – Your business “home base.” (e.g., A wellness coach with a booking page and testimonials.)
  • Online Store – Where customers can buy 24/7. (e.g., A candle maker selling via Shopify or Etsy.)
  • Social media – Your public voice and community. (e.g., An event planner using Instagram Reels to showcase events.)
  • Email Marketing – A direct line to customers. (e.g., A coffee subscription service sending weekly offers.)
  • Blog/Podcast/Vlog – Sharing expertise and stories. (e.g., A financial advisor hosting a podcast on money tips.)
  • Ads (Social/Search) – Paid campaigns to reach new audiences quickly.
  • Affiliate Partners – Others promoting your products for commission.

Startups don’t need everything at once. Pick one or two platforms where your customers already spend time.

Digital Skills Every Entrepreneur Needs

  1. Basic Tech Literacy – Setting up and managing online tools.
  1. Content Creation – Designing graphics, writing posts, or recording short videos.
  1. Customer Engagement – Replying to messages, nurturing leads, converting followers into buyers.
  1. Data Awareness – Reading analytics to see what’s working (e.g., Instagram insights, website traffic).
  1. AI Support – Using tools like ChatGPT for content, Canva AI for visuals, or Shopify AI for product descriptions.

Even if you outsource, these basics help you stay in control.

Tools to Explore as a Startup

  • Canva – Simple design for social posts, flyers, brochures.
  • Wix / Shopify / Squarespace / Etsy – Quick-start websites and stores.
  • Mailchimp / Mailerlite / ConvertKit – Start building your email list.
  • Zapier / HubSpot / Calendly – Automate tasks (e.g., auto-send welcome emails, schedule calls).
  • AI Tools (ChatGPT, Canva AI) – Save hours creating posts, emails, or website copy.
